The No 1 unit of the Hassan 4×600MW Clean Coal-fired Power Plant Project -- in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) -- was recently successfully connected to the grid.

It is the first clean coal power station in the Middle East and is a major international cooperation project for the Belt and Road Initiative.

This marked the first Chinese-funded company participating in the investment, construction and operation of a power station project in the Middle East. It achieved significant results and was also a major milestone in the history of China's overseas power project construction.

POWERCHINA Turbo Technologies Co -- a subsidiary of POWERCHINA -- provided the adjustable blade axial fan technology for all four units of the power plant.

The materials, standard parts and processes all required the use of European standards and the design consulting department completed the conversion of all standards and materials from the national standard to the European standard.

The induced draft fan was also equipped with an automated fan brake device to meet the owner's requirements for fan operation and safety.

Made up of four ultra-supercritical units with a total installed capacity of 2,400MW, the power plant project is capable of completely burning coal or natural gas as a backup fuel.

All four units will go into commercial operations in 2023, after which they will not only provide 20 percent of the electric power for Dubai, but also greatly reduce the electricity costs of local residents.
