The first unit of the Lower Bozsui Hydropower Station and the first unit of the Tashkent Hydropower Station in Uzbekistan -- constructed by STECOL Corporation, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA -- was recently completed and handed over to the owner to start operations.

This marked the point when all five units of the three hydroelectric power stations involved in the renovation project in Uzbekistan were connected to the grid for power generation and had started commercial operations.

It was the first engineering procurement construction (EPC) project implemented under the China-Uzbekistan hydropower cooperation project of the Belt and Road Forum for Cooperation.

The development has played an important role in strengthening China-Uzbekistan energy cooperation and promoting joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Amid the challenges posed by the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, the POWERCHINA project department had ensured the high-quality performance of the project, while doing a great job in undertaking epidemic prevention and control measures.

Through innovative management methods, it had solved many difficulties including a shortage of construction personnel, lags in equipment manufacturing and transportation and the inability of key technical staff members to travel to the site.

STECOL Corporation and POWERCHINA's regional headquarters in Eurasia conducted cloud video conferences to inspect the on-site epidemic prevention and control work and the safety of construction. It offered constructive guidance, which provided a guarantee for the project's quality and quantity, ensuring it was completed on schedule.

Uzbekistan is a big energy consumer. This year, due to the effects of unfavorable factors – including the epidemic and low water levels -- the country's hydropower energy was severely depleted, resulting in power shortages.

The power generation by the five units of the three hydropower stations has helped relieve the pressure on the power supply to hospitals, municipalities and residents in the capital Tashkent and surrounding areas.

It will improve the profitability of power stations, play a greater role in the region's energy security and promote Uzbekistan's economic construction to achieve sustainable development.
