Since the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway has large amounts of traffic (about 1,000 vehicles every ten minutes at night), the construction contractor has come up with a way to ensure that each girder will be finished within 15 minutes, so as to minimize the impact on traffic.

The Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road is part of the supporting road system for Hongqiao Integrated Transportation Hub. The northern section of the elevated road begins at the Beizhai Elevated Road, then stretches all the way across Wusong River, the Jinshajiang West Road and the Huyi Road to the S6 Huxiang Highway. The section has a total length of 11.4 km and will be built in two phases.

The first phase of the northern section connects Beizhai Elevated Road and the Hongqiao Hub. To the north, it reaches to Cao’an Road. Construction work of the first phase includes the Wusong River Bridge Project and the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway Interchange Project. The mainline of the elevated road of the first phase stretches 4.6 km.

As one of the key projects of the northern section, Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway Interchange will have 4 layers with a huge arc that has a diameter of 270 meters. A total of 44 girders will be set up for the interchange.

According to reports, over 70 % of the construction work for the first phase of the northern section has been completed. About 80% of the girders for the two-way six-lane road have been erected, and 70% of the girders for the interchange have been done.

For the mainline, construction of the bridge surface has already began. The elevated road south of the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway is expected to be open to traffic by the end of December, while the ground road south of the Jinyuan Forth Road will also be put into use at the same time.

As for the second phase of the northern section, girders for the 800-meter long cross-railway bridge have been set up, and the pile foundations at the southern end of the bridge where the two phases join are gradually being put in place.
