The Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently struck a deal with the Jiading Industrial Zone to build an optical component manufacturing base at the zone, local media reported on March 1.
With a total investment of 1 billion yuan ($153 million), the project will be carried out in two stages – 400 million yuan for the first stage and 600 million for the second.
Taking up an area of 184 mu (12.3 hectares), the base will consist of 50,000-square-meter buildings. It will be in charge of the R&D, processing and production of large, high-power and high-precision laser materials and components needed in the country's key science projects.
When the base starts operation, experts predicted that its output value will amount to 800 million yuan. Hopefully, the new setup will increase the district's taxation in a major way.
And after five years, its output value is expected to reach 1.6 billion yuan.
