The Disease Control and Prevention Branch of the China Association of Health Education was inaugurated at a forum on healthy city development in Shanghai's Jiading district on June 9.
More than 120 representatives from 71 disease control and prevention institutions from across the country attended the inauguration ceremony.
The branch will focus on promoting health education and contributing to the construction of a healthy China. It will coordinate disease control and prevention campaigns, organize related academic exchanges and launch public health-themed training activities.
The forum on healthy city development was organized by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, Jiading government, and Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health Promotion.
The progress of Shanghai's healthy city construction, also known as citizen's health self-management program, was introduced at the forum. Some experts in attendance proposed to combine health self-management with disease control and prevention, and to promote a healthy lifestyle among all citizens.
Jiading was selected as one of the first two pilot areas for China's Healthy City Program by the World Health Organization and China's Ministry of Health in 1994.
As of the end of 2016, the average life expectancy of residents in Jiading had increased to 83.52. Pregnancy mortality rates had reduced to zero, while infant mortality rates had fallen to 1.71 per thousand.
