The Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics (SITP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was cofounded by CAS and Fudan University in October 1958 and became an independent CAS institute in 1962.

The institute is a comprehensive research-oriented State-owned institute that engages in basic and applied research and the industrialization of advanced technology.

It mainly focuses on the application of infrared physics and optoelectronics technology and puts particular emphasis on new infrared photoelectric materials, devices, and methods. It has also been developing advanced technologies related to airborne and space-borne payloads, infrared staring imaging, infrared signal processing, infrared focal plane arrays, and remote sensing information processing.

The institute has 13 research departments, a key national laboratory for infrared physics, the photo-sensor branch of a key national lab for sensor technology, four key CAS labs, and one lab jointly built by provincial and ministerial departments. It also currently has 435 projects in progress (120 engineering projects and 315 basic pre-research projects).

By the end of 2018, there were 1,152 people working in the institute, of whom 730 were professionals or technical staff. It also boasts a high-end talent pool consisting of seven CAS academicians, two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one academician of the China Science Center of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and over 80 other experts.

The institute was one of the first organizations in China to issue master's and PhD degrees, and it has six doctoral and eight postgraduate programs on physical electronics, microelectronics, solid-state electronics, circuits, systems, optics, condensed matter physics, and refrigeration and cryogenic engineering. 555 postgraduate and 20 postdoctoral students were enrolled at the institute in 2018.

The united editorial office for journals of the institute publishes the Journal of Infrared and Millimeter Waves and the monthly Infrared.
