According to Yunjian Annals written in the Southern Song Dynasty, people with the surname "She" lived here in the ancient time, so the mountain was named Sheshan Mountain. According to Wuxing Annals, the mountain got the name as there was General She's Temple in the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25~220).

When Emperor Kangxi ate bamboo roots in Sheshan Mountain during his southern tour, he spoke highly of them. In the 59th year of his reign (AD 1720), he named Sheshan Mountain "Lan Sun" (literally "Orchid Bamboo Root") Mountain

Sheshan Mountain has an eastern peak and a western peak, called East Sheshan Mountain and West Sheshan Mountain. They stretch several miles. East Sheshan Mountain is 72.4m high and has an area of about 57ha.

It is green in the four seasons and bamboos are all over the slopes. Behind the mountain, there are cliffs formed by quarries. West Sheshan Mountain is 97.2m high and has an area of about 60ha.

It is covered with dense forests and bamboos. The trees include camphor trees, wingnut trees, beech trees and more. Some of them are more than one hundred years old. On the eastern slope of the West Sheshan Mountain stands Xiudaozhe Pagoda built in the Taipingxingguo Period of the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 976~984).

At the western foot, Sheshan Tea Garden was opened in the modern times. The natural landscape and human landscape of Sheshan Mountain are the best among the nine peaks and 12 mountains.
