Liu Li, a judge from Beijing’s Chaoyang district, was honored as one of the “Persons of the Year” to promote the rule of law in China at a China Central Television (CCTV) award ceremony on Dec 4.

The event was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Justice, the National Office for Popularization of Legal Knowledge and the CCTV.

Liu, acting chief judge of the Olympic Village tribunal of the Chaoyang District People’s Court, won the award for her efforts in many complicated cases that had attracted wide attention, such as the divorce of Li Yang, the founder of ‘Crazy English’. Many of her adjudications have become classic examples of their kind.

She has also put forward eight rules for the trial of road transportation damage cases, which have been adopted by relevant judicial interpretations of the Supreme People’s Court. Her suggestions of setting up standard road markings have turned ‘dangerous roads’ with frequent accidents into ‘safe roads’.

In recent years, Liu Li has tried over 2,000 civil cases, around 400 each year, involving over 7,000 litigants, with no petition or complaint against the rulings.

Previously, Liu had won honorary titles including an Outstanding Individual of the National Courts and an Outstanding Individual in Safeguarding the Rights of Women and Children. She has also won a first-class merit award and two third-class merit awards. On June 19, 2014, she was named one of the “Most Beautiful Grassroots Judges in China” by the Publicity Department of the Party’s Central Committee and the Supreme People’s Court.

December 4 marked the 1st anniversary of China’s Constitution Day and also the 30th anniversary of the country’s effort in law popularization and publicity. This award aims to honor major achievements of the legal profession, commend legal workers who illustrate the spirit of the Constitution, pay tribute to those who hold fast to legal beliefs, promote legal awareness of citizens and encourage legal progress.
