Ma Huateng is top donor in China

Ma Huateng, chairman and CEO of Tencent, was named China's biggest donator from 2011 to 2016, donating up to 17.235 billion yuan ($2.5 billion), in a report released in April by the China Philanthropy Research Institute of Beijing Normal University and China Global Philanthropy Institute. He was followed by Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma, who donated 17.193 billion yuan. The report said for the 123 donators who donated more than 100 million yuan during the past six years, most of the donations were emotional, short-term and unsustainable. About half, it added, were related to commercial strategy.

Wal-mart donates 10.5 m for women

Wal-mart China donated 10.5 million yuan ($1.52 million) in late April to the Raise Her Business Plan launched by the China Women's Development Foundation. The program targets women from poverty-stricken areas, female entrepreneurs of small start-ups and businesswomen. Under it, online and offline training classes about job hunting, social responsibility and entrepreneurship will be held among those groups. The company will also provide financing for innovative projects put forward by rural women and in June investigate the challenges working mothers face in developed cities.

Iris data system starts operation

The Anti-lost Iris Network Platform for Chinese Kids was established in April to help prevent hijacking and find lost children. The China National Committee for the Wellbeing of the Youth, one of the organizers, said they planned to set up more than 2,000 working stations around the country by 2019, where parents can bring their children under 12 years old to have their iris data uploaded. Wang Shiping, general manager of Zhaobao Technology (Shanghai) Co Ltd, the company that provided technical support for the platform, said iris recognition was more stable and accurate than fingerprinting or face recognition.

Smiling faces for World Smile Day

The Chinese Red Cross Foundation began a collection of 1,000 smiling faces through online and offline channels in late April, to celebrate the upcoming World Smile Day on May 8. Wang Shuo, brand and communication manager of the Chinese Red Cross Foundation, said the event aimed to promote an optimistic and positive way of life. The faces, whether in the form of photos or artistic works, will be exhibited in Pakistan in early May together with the establishment of the Sino-Pakistan emergency medical center.

Rural schools to get libraries

Some 10,000 homeowners organized by real estate company Sunac China Holdings Limited ran 100 million steps for cash to donate libraries to six schools in rural areas of southwestern China's Guizhou province in late April. The event was held in six cities on the same day. A Sunac China employee said the libraries would be equipped with more than 1,000 books, several computers and teaching aids. Attendees also wrote down suggested books for the company to buy. It will send books and audio poems to children living in the mountainous areas of Guizhou in June.
