A delegation of five members from the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad -- Beijing 2008 (BOCOG), led by BOCOG Executive Vice-President Wang Wei reported to the IOC Executive Board (EB) in Kuwait on the morning of November 29, 2006.

The BOCOG presentation to the EB lasted around one hour and covered a number of points including the environment, media services, ticketing, image and look, infrastructure progress, marketing and test events. The three key areas to be highlighted from BOCOG's presentation were the environment, ticketing and test events.

Environmental Improvement

During his intervention at the EB, Wang Wei stressed the importance being given to the environment by both BOCOG and the Beijing municipality. He noted while the subject of air quality was an important issue for all involved in the Games, from the IOC through to the athletes, there were many positive signs the air quality was improving.

For example, Wang pointed out that , by 2005 levels of sulphur dioxide , nitrogen dioxide and inhalable particles in the air had dropped by 30%, 13% and 7%, respectively. These drops have been helped at least in part by the efforts being made to implement the notion of 'Green Olympics'.

Moreover, he commented that the Beijing municipality was taking a number of key measures to help improve air quality, such as relocating polluting factories, renovating 2,800 coal-burning boilers, and replacing taxis and buses that have excessive emissions. All these efforts, which will have a beneficial impact on air quality, will be underpinned by a plan for pollution control during Games time.

Wang Wei also confirmed to the EB BOCOG had found a ticket pricing solution, which had subsequently been approved by the IOC, whereby tickets would be available for sale at affordable prices which would allow the local population to attend and enjoy the Games first hand.

Test Events

On the topic of test events, Wang Wei updated the EB on the successful events that had taken place in 2006 and told them that 2007 would see a total of 26 test events take place. Indeed 12 of these test events will take place in August alone, with six of them taking place in a cluster format. This will allow BOCOG to further test its operations but also, during the cluster, to test its ability to integrate activities while several events are going on at the same time.

Feeling the Excitement

In conclusion to his presentation, Wang Wei said, "the year 2007 will be a crucial year for all of us, during which we shall have important meetings such as the one-year-to-go celebration, SportAccord, and the World Conference on Sport and Environment, in addition to 26 test events. We feel the excitement and the pressure, and we are looking forward to working with you to achieve the best we can."
