It's ready, go for Games in Shanghai

A welcoming reception
Around 1,900 families in 144 communities across Shanghai will open their homes and hearts to participants at the Special Olympics World Summer Games, allowing athletes to relax and turn differences into shared experiences.
Under the Host Town Program, a non-sport activity connected to the Special Olympics, community residents will offer accommodation and organize events that will give the delegations a chance to rest, acclimate and enjoy their stay in China.
The program, which runs until Sunday, will give people with differing intellectual disabilities a chance to interact. Eleven other cities, including Beijing, Xi'an and Ha'erbin, are also participating in the program.
Zhang Hong, a young blind school accountant in the Minhang District, is excited that her family has been appointed as one of the community host families.
"I always get along well with blind children although I don't teach. Some students are not only visually impaired but mentally challenged too. After some time I found they are able to pick up new skills as long as they practice repetitively," she said.
"For instance, they can find a microwave button to cook sliced potatoes; they can give out cards to teachers during festivals; and write words like 'stay healthy' on them."
Zhang plans to chat and play games with the athletes and make dumplings and wonton for her special guests. Her mother will cook for them too. Zhang is thinking of giving Chinese knots, representing lasting friendship, as gifts.
The main events of the program include:
A welcoming ceremony. Every community will hold a welcome party for the delegations and arrange for them to stay in hotels.
A banquet. Athletes will try Chinese food and enjoy some cultural performances.
Fitness exercises. Athletes can organize friendly matches with local Special Olympics athletes, in order to adapt to the city's weather and environment and prepare for their events.
Visiting local families. Delegation members will gain a general idea of the life of a typical Shanghai family during their visit, enjoying folk arts and sports, and authentic homemade cuisine.
Visiting scenic spots. Some districts will organize trips to famous spots, such as museums and parks.
A farewell party. Residents will hold a get together for the delegations the night before they leave. Traditional Chinese gifts or photo albums of the delegations will be presented.
