Comment on "Wrecking ball smashes hope of affordability" (China Daily, Oct 15)

The news that Beijing began demolishing some government-subsidized poor-quality buildings from August is surprising. Why does a benevolent business become a mournful event all of a sudden?

Though all levels of governments want to improve people's living standards, some of them lack the responsibility of "doing a good thing better".

Demolitions not only waste resources and pollute the environment, but also make people disappointed. Such things happen because the authorities have failed to establish an efficient supervision system to guarantee the quality of buildings.

Real estate developers must know that the construction of huge affordable apartment blocks creates plenty of opportunities for development. They should understand the governments' intention and peoples' expectations, too. But some of them lack corporate social responsibility, even basic conscience.

A fair society should be driven by liability and governed by conscience. Only then can the goal of inclusive growth be achieved.
