Comment on "Sweetheart to spend wedding gifts on school uniforms" (China Daily, Nov 15)

This story reminded me of my early school days in the late 1990s, when we wore everyday clothes, instead of uniforms, to school. Many of the students, including myself, from working class families were often bullied and made fun of because our outfits were not "cool" or trendy enough.

For some financially well-of students, school uniforms may be a nuisance but for financially deprived ones, uniforms could serve as a shield of human dignity.

That's why I share many other readers' appreciation for Chen Huaxin and Wu Wenyuan's kind gesture of using their wedding cash gifts to buy school uniforms for children who live in impoverished mountainous village in Guizhou province. As volunteer teachers, they have extended their humanitarian care beyond the spread of knowledge among poor children by getting them properly dressed for school. With their charity, they have personalized the notion of rural education in China.
