I must talk about my Canadian friend who married a Chinese young woman - his former student. Well, her family demanded Y50,000 RMB as a bride price and they would not budge. So, he made out a bankers or cashiers check, not sure which, and gave it to the parents.

Anyway, during the wedding dinner, the father was showing all the guests the check, how much he "got" for his daughter. Then, towards the end of the evening, he gave back the check and "magnanimously" told my friend to use it to buy themselves a house.

It was all about face. The question is, are you willing to take that chance?
