It's pretty much the norm at Italian weddings to give cash. Very few people give actual gifts. If the bride is registered, then it's given to buy for the shower, not the actual wedding gift. Just write a check, put it in a nice wedding card and give it to them the day of the wedding, that's how most people do it and how it was done at my wedding.
