Chinese Dream in expat's eyes

Since Chinese President Xi Jinping first used the concept of "Chinese Dream" on Nov. 29, 2012 in Beijing, it has resonated with the world's common aspiration of development. Here we bring stories by expats who pursue their own Chinese Dream.

Yunnan - my most incredible destination in China

To travel from one place to another has different purposes, people do not always travel to gain knowledge and experience, some travel for pleasure, some for business, but travelling is my passion.

Scenery dreams are made of

A few years ago I met up with some of my former secondary school classmates who were doing business in Shanghai. One of the guys suggested we visit Kanas in Xinjiang as they still had some free time. Without hesitation we packed our bags and left the next day.

China looks ahead to a bright future

[2014-02-27 18:01]

Chinese leaders are demonstrating a high level of skill in managing the most populated country in the world. The success of their policies in the last decades is evident and a demonstration of what means to have 5000 years of history in one's back. China is able to demonstrate its force, dosing it wisely according to the situations. And it is able to have a long view, for example in its committment in Africa, something that countries managed by 4-5 years lasting administrations are unable to do. China is a modern society, projected to the future. You read this in the eyes of all young people you meet. Just some adjustments are needed.

Changing China through an expat's eyes

[2014-02-27 18:01]

What I see every day is, that people see the changes for good. Most of the Chinese citizens don't care if it is communist or capitalist market. Most important is - if they have their life better. And it is better than 20-30 years ago.In the villages - more solid buildings, in the cities - modern facilities. And I think it will be even better than now. Deng Xiaoping developed "the way of water", after the "time of fire", so maybe it is better not to step back, even if some times ago the fire had been considered necessary. When the World have crisis - China is still developing. Even when export is lower - internal market grows, and have huge reserves.

China's development: What we do and don't know

[2014-02-27 18:01]

By any standard, China's economic performance over the last three decades has been impressive. That being said, China's economy per se is not without structural problems and vulnerabilities. China's GDP growth rate are 8.7%, 9.2%, 9.2%, 7.8%, 7.7% from 2009 to 2013, respectively. It seems that China is shifting from a high growth rate stage to a moderate one. Does this suggest a gloomy future for China? The answer is no. According to economist Yifu Lin, China has the potential to keep an 8% growth rate in the next two decades. But the question is how to develop China's potential? This is a main task for China's new leadership.

Maybe there is room for one foreigner to make a difference in helping build the bridge to what China wants to become: a so-called first-world country.

Young and old reflect nobility of China

[2015-04-30 16:42]

The past, present and future of the biggest country in the world combined in one instant in time. This little Chinese boy touched the tradition of his country with one hand while proudly clutching his national flag with the other.

China's changes I have seen

[2014-03-17 13:10]

Since I first stepped foot in China in 1992 I have noticed many changes. There are more automobiles on the road than ever before but fortunately the highways have improved. There used to be far more bicycles and small, rickshaw-like carriers, except they were motorized. I still see them on occasion, but not nearly as many as before. Another big change is that the hospitals have improved drastically, at least the ones that I have visited. When I went for my first medical checkup back in '92, nobody at the hospital spoke English and it was not a pleasant environment.

Future of China is the future of humanity

[2015-09-25 14:41]

It is hard to escape the fact that China has been hitting the headlines in the US media lately. Between Xi Jinping's visit to the US, it's time to take notice of China's ever increasing role in the world today.
