Asian Games Special: Friendly cooperation before the competition kicks off

Chinese coaches are helping to train Pakistan's teams for the Games in Guangzhou, Masood Khan, the Pakistan Ambassador to China told China Daily reporter in a recent interview.

He said that the coaches will help with training swimmers and table tennis players as well as other athletes. The arrangement is the result of talks between Pakistan's President and the Chinese President and Prime Minister.

This close cooperation between the two countries shows that the Games is much more than just a competition. It's also a chance to build relationships. "This event in Guangzhou means much more than just being athletic," said the ambassador.

"I think the 16th Asian Games have a symbolic value because they can promote harmony between all the nations in the region."

But it is still a chance to engage in some healthy competition.

"Pakistan's athletes are looking forward to taking part in the Games," said the Ambassador.

Pakistan was very successful in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, winning more than 100 medals. The ambassador hopes for an even higher medal tally in Guangzhou.

He said the country is excited about the event.

"All levels in Pakistan, the government and the people, are really looking forward to the event. We are participating in large numbers and hope to win medals, but beyond medals we want this to be a learning experience."

In Pakistan, field hockey and Polo are the national sports but cricket is by far the most popular. Traditional games like Kabaddi are also played.

Over recent years there has been an increase in sporting activity in the country, with Pakistani sportsmen and sportswomen participating in national and international events.

In addition, more international tournaments now take place in Pakistan.

Commenting on the role the Asian Games plays in promoting communication and exchange among Asian countries, the ambassador said: "The Games bring together young men and women from different parts of Asia. This is going to promote cooperation among sports authorities."

He sees the Games as another opportunity for China to demonstrate its qualities of leadership and organization following on from the Beijing Olympic Games. He was very impressed by the Beijing Games, in particular the volunteers' working during the Games.

"They were a key part of the successful management of the event. The same experience will be repeated again during the Asian Games. These volunteers will be able to demonstrate to the rest of the world how volunteering can make a real difference at such events."

The ambassador anticipates that the Games will be very successful and that they will be "a spectacular event".
