A pharmaceutical show to open in Shanghai

An international pharmaceutical show will open at the Shanghai Pudong New International Expo Center on June 2.
The three-day event, entitled CPhI & ICSE China 2010, is sponsored by China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines and Health Products and UBM International Media.
More than 1400 enterprises from 20 countries and regions are expected to display their exhibits at the 62,000-square-meter show, said Zhao Jingman, director of the Exhibition Section of CCCIEMHP.
Well-known exhibitors include Merck, Roquette, Johnson Matthey, Rohm & Haas, Evonik Degussa and Novasep. More than 30,000 professional visitors will patronize the show, Zhao said.
He said many small and medium-sized pharmaceutical enterprises will also take part in the show to seek co-operation opportunities.
"The show has become an important platform for exhibitors from home and abroad to have mutual exchange and co-operation," he said.
Tan Shencai, deputy secretary general of CCCIEMHP, said the show has also become a stimulus to the fast development of China's pharmaceutical industry.
China witnessed exports and imports of medicines and health products valued at $53.15 billion last year, becoming the world's largest pharmaceutical producer and exporter, Tan said.
Pharmaceutical exports to 179 countries and regions in Asia, Europe and North America in 2009 accounted for 87.25 per cent of China's total exported medicines, he said.
Exports to the Asian market increased by 7 per cent, while those to the European and American markets dropped slightly. But Tan said exports to the markets in Latin America and Africa grew by 28 per cent and 22 per cent respectively.
Some medical seminars will be held at the show to discuss the development of the world's pharmaceutical industry. A world pharmaceutical summit will open with chief executive officers from more than 100 big pharmaceutical companies attending, said Zhao.
