Charming Shengjin Lake after snow

About Shengjin Lake

Lying at the confluence of Dongzhi and Guichi counties, Shengjin Lake is a national nature reserve and an important wetland in the world. It is also well-known as a popular ecological tourist attraction integrating science popularization and survey, education sightseeing and leisure.

The actual water area of the lake covers some 133 square km and its favorable ecological system has nurtured abundant aquatic plants and many kinds of plankton, providing a good environment and plenty of food for birds and waterfowls. In fact, it attracts some 100,000-150,000 wetland birds which fall into over 170 different species in winter every year. Of these, the number of hooded cranes holds a proportion of 5 percent of the world's total, and the number of white-naped cranes, white cranes, common cranes, black-necked cranes and Eurasian Spoonbill is also significantly large. Flocks of cranes flying across the clear cold sky are a common sight, hence another name China's Crane Lake. In addition to these natural attractions, the area abounds in man- made landscapes, most impressive of which is probably the great bridge spanning the lake. Landaochen Village and Male and Female Stones with their mysterious legends are also most appealing to visitors.
