Witnessing Chengdu’s post-earthquake success

Wang Wenxiang, president of US-based JM Group Inc and son of Wang Yung-ching, former president of Formosa Plastics Group: “I like Chengdu, because I’ve seen Chengdu residents with a look of satisfaction in their faces. Only very comfortable city environments can enable local residents to look so content. When I revisited Chengdu and visited the exhibition room showing how local people recovered and reconstructed their homeland from the devastating earthquake, I was affected once again by my father’s teaching: The ultimate objective of doing business is to reward society.”
Meng Jing, deputy secretary of the Communist League Committee of Xiamen and Jianfa Group: "When I came to the Dujiangyan disaster area for the first time, I thought I would see scenes of devastation everywhere. But the city was thriving. The single-family-type housing that has been built looks like the countryside villas of Europe. They are connected with water and electricity and optical fibers. They have vegetable gardens in front of and behind the houses.”
Chen Xiangdong, vice-president of the Chengdu branch of China Merchants Bank: “I can feel how happy people in the disaster areas are. Young people have gone to work in other cities. Students are going to school. The old people stay at home spending their remaining years in comfort. Some people have launched their own businesses.”
Ma Jianing, vice-president of GE (China) Co Ltd: “I’ve been to Dujiangyan many times. Each time, I saw fewer remains of the earthquake. More houses have been built. The Chengdu people have shown their spirit in post-disaster reconstruction.”
Wang Huayu, consultant to the China Taiwan Red Cross Society and former president of Mandarin Airlines: “I love this city. I love the firm and tenacious spirit of Chengdu. The city looks so beautiful and comfortable. It remains my favorite city! It has become more amazing.”
Xuan Xun, vice-president of Austria’s Europe United Weekly: “Chengdu has developed into a very modern city, but different from Beijing and Shanghai, Chengdu looks more leisure-oriented and peaceful. It is a better place for people to stay and live.”
Marija Adanja, Slovenian ambassador to China: “This is the fourth time for I have visited Chengdu. This city looks leisurely, tranquil and beautiful. It reminds me of my hometown in Slovenia.”
Joe Goldman, chief medical officer of the Sino-German Red Cross Field Hospital: “I am convinced the Chengdu people will make the disaster areas more beautiful. I also hope to have the chance to return and see Dujiangyan.”

It is apparent that the residents’ living conditions and infrastructure are much better than in the past. I hope they will enjoy their lives.”
