Sanmenxia improves benefits for senior citizens

City and district authorities in Sanmenxia have established a series of measures aimed at improving the lives of senior citizens since the 12th Five-Year Plan was issued in 2011.

Under the guidance of the plan, the city's Hubin district has made steady progress in implementing the new national social insurance system for urban and rural residents. In addition to the minimum allowance being raised for retirees, the district has distributed an additional 100 yuan ($15.61) per month for people over 60, the highest amount in the province.

In the five-year period, the district's financial department allocated?six million yuan for endowment insurance payments to senior farmers who agreed to relocate to make way for urban redevelopment projects.

Statistics show that the coverage of the new social insurance system is increasing on a daily basis, helping to benefit a wider part of the community. Additional policies aimed at benefiting locals have been established, including an allowance system, minimum living guarantee and subsidies for low-income families and those diagnosed with serious illness.

To improve medical facilities,?two million yuan was allocated by the district government as part of a plan to establish 10 standardized local health clinics. The clinics have increased medical access among elderly villagers.

Since 2013, the district established 19 clubs providing activities for senior citizens. The clubs provide food and give visitors the opportunities to read books, play games and exercise.

According to a government official, a large number of young people have migrated to wealthier parts of the country to seek opportunities, increasing the burden of elderly care on society. Policies implemented during the 12th Five-Year Plan are part of a wider effort to improve social stability, the official added.
