Rapid rail to link Pudong and Hongqiao
The Shanghai government plans to build a rail network stretching over 800 kilometers and a rail rapid transit system connecting Pudong and Hongqiao airports in the next decade, according to a municipal government press conference on August 23.
The nearly-finished Shanghai Municipal Transportation Development White Paper sets a tone for the future development of rail transit in Shanghai. The government will develop a suburban railway actively, promote the priority of buses on the road, create bus priority lanes totaling 500 km, and adopt various means of transportation like trolley cars and bus rapid transit lines tailored to local conditions.
Meanwhile, to further improve intercity transportation services, the government is going to build a rapid rail transit system between Pudong and Hongqiao international airports, continue construction of the Shanghai-Nantong Railway and Shanghai-Zhapu Railway, establish an expressway network and enhance connections among inter-provincial roads.
