Xi'an is the capital of Shannxi Province which is the starting point of the world-famous Silk Road in the past. As one of the six ancient capitals in China, Xi'an is also a world-famous tourist city with a large amount of amazing cultural relics. The transportation of Xi'an is also incredibly convenient, because it is located in the geographic centre of China and has developed a modern three-dimensional transportation network with air, rail, and highway, which has greatly brought convenience to tourists from all over the world.

By air

Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is located in Xianyang suburb which is in the northwest of Xi'an City. There are flights which go back and forth between the major domestic cities as well as international flights heading to Japan, Thailand, Korea and other countries. Currently there are more than 150 routes and more than 400 flights operating from approximately 20 airlines in this airport. In addition, the airport is 47 km away from the centre of Xi'an which is about an hour from the city along the airport expressway.

By train

Xi'an Railway Station is the largest railway hub in the west of China, connecting many railway lines such as the Longhai Railway Line, Xikang Railway Line, HouXi Railway Line, and Ningxi Railway line. Xi'an Railway Station is not only one of the top grade passenger stations in China but also an important spot in Eurasian Land Bridge. In addition, trains heading to Lhasa from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and other cities must go through Xi'an Station. Xi'an Railway Station is located in the northeast of the city which is about a 30 minute drive from the city centre. Most city buses arrive at the railway station, so it is very convenient for tourists to go by train.

By subway

The construction of Xi'an Subway Line 2 officially started on September 29 and has already put into place in 2011. Line 1 was started on October 29 2008 and is supposed to be completed in 2013. With the completion of the subway construction, Xi'an has become the first city in northwest China which possesses metro rail transportation.

By bus

Buses with the number of 1, 2, and 6 as the starting number are common buses while the buses with number 5 and 7 as the starting number is a different bus which charges on the basis of how far you go. There are also many tourist buses leading to all the attractions around Xi'an City and these buses are with the word “游” at the beginning of it.
