Over 900 foreign aid workers allowed into Myanmar

YANGON -- A total of 911 persons from international aid groups and experts have been granted visas to enter Myanmar to carry out humanitarian relief aid activities, medical care and assessment of damage respectively ever since Cyclone  Nargis hit the country early last month, state media reported Wednesday.

The 911 persons, allowed in Myanmar, included 458 persons from the United Nations and international non-governmental organizations, 357 from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and neighboring countries as well as 96 persons to attend ASEAN-U.N. meeting, the New light of Myanmar reported.

So far, 342 persons have left and 569 are still working in the storm-hit areas, the report said.

Deadly tropical cyclone Nargis, which swept Myanmar's Ayeyawaddy delta and Yangon division on May 2-3, killed 77,738 people, left 55,917 missing and 19,359 injured according to official statistics.
