FBI to aid Indian police over Mumbai attacker trial

NEW DELHI -- A United States Federal Bureau of Investigation  (FBI) team will next week arrive in India to assist the police in the legal proceedings against Abdul Ajmal alias Qasab, the lone militant caught alive, and others involved in the Mumbai terror attacks last Novermber, a senior Indian Home Ministry official said Sunday.

An Indian special court will resume hearing of Kasab's case from Monday.

"A legal team from FBI would arrive in India next week. It will provide the Indian authorities with all the possible legal assistance it needs in the Mumbai terror attacks case. The team would also give the Mumbai police the eletronic evidence they have gathered in the case," the official said, on condition of anonymity.

Over 170 people, including six American nationals, were killed and hundreds injured in the Mumbai terror attacks on Novermber 26 last year. And, according to US law, FBI has to investigate the deaths of American nationals in the overseas.

The Indian police have formally filed charge sheet against Kasab and 46 others for staging the Mumbai attacks. Indian police accuse the three and 44 others of waging war against India, murder, terrorism, cyber crimes, and destroying public properties, among others.
