BISHKEK - Kyrgyzstan's presidential election could be postponed for up to two weeks following a successful appeal by five rejected candidates, a Supreme Court source told Interfax Thursday.

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) rejected the registrations of Nariman Tyuleyev, Toktayym Umetaliyeva, Askarbek Abyshkayev, Kalybek Arabayev and Ulanbek Soodanbekov, saying the majority of signatures for their nominations were not authentic.

However, the CEC has agreed to another check of signature sheets after an order by the Supreme Court, which upheld the appeals of the five contenders.

Journalists and representatives of the applicants would witness the new verification of signature sheets, the CEC said.

If the verification confirms the authenticity of at least 30,000 signatures for each, the applicants will be allowed to take a state language exam and will be registered if they pass it, the source said.

Proposals have been made to delay for one or two weeks the October 30 election if the new candidates are registered.

There are already 20 presidential candidates in Kyrgyzstan.
