IMF chief lawyers propose $1 million bail-court papers

NEW YORK -?Defense lawyers for IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who is charged with trying to rape a hotel maid, want him released on $1 million cash bail and placed under 24-hour home detention with electronic monitoring, court papers showed on Wednesday.

A bail hearing in the case is due to be held on Thursday before a New York State Supreme Court justice, Strauss-Kahn attorney Shawn Naunton told Reuters.

It was not immediately clear if Strauss-Kahn would be present at the hearing. He has been detained since Monday at New York's Rikers Island jail and is due back in court on Friday.

"We respectfully submit that these additional bail conditions eliminate any concern that Mr. Strauss-Kahn would or could leave this court's jurisdiction," said the papers, submitted by Strauss-Kahn's defense lawyers.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers have denied the charges of a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching.

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Manhattan prosecutors urged a judge on Monday to detain Strauss-Kahn, arguing he would flee to France if released on bail.

The court papers included a signed affidavit by Strauss-Kahn in which he waived his right to fight extradition if he fails to report to court.

The court papers also provided a more detailed timeline of events leading up to Strauss-Kahn's arrest onboard an Air France flight on Saturday afternoon. The papers said Strauss-Kahn checked out of the Sofitel hotel near Times Square in Manhattan at 12:28 pm and headed to a previously scheduled lunch "a few blocks away" at around 12:45 pm.

A law enforcement source told Reuters hotel security called police an hour after Strauss-Kahn left to report the alleged sexual assault.
