Guangzhou has further tightened its measures against COVID-19, putting more communities and streets under closed management while the number of infections remains high in this Guangdong provincial capital on Tuesday.

In addition to Haizhu district where strict controlled measures continue to be in place, Liwan district has required all the kindergartens, primary and high schools to suspend offline classes starting Wednesday while colleges, universities and vocational college are asked to introduce closed management measures.

The suspension will continue until the end of Sunday, according to a statement released by Liwan district government on Wednesday.

And online classes have been recommended for the entirety of Liwan, it said.

The move aims to help limit the flow of people and avoid any outbreak in campuses, said the statement.

Meanwhile the district has suspended operations of a large number of metro stations and bus stops in district's medium and high risk areas, the statement said.

Local residents in the controlled zones and the medium and high risk areas have been required not to go out unless absolutely necessary.

Also, district-wide nucleic acid testing has been launched beginning Wednesday to help find possibly infected people and block the transmission chains, it added.

According to a statement released by Guangdong Provincial Health Commission, the city reported another 91 local transmitted confirmed cases, plus 2,546 asymptomatic carriers, on Tuesday, indicating the transmission chains in the city have yet been blocked completely.

Guangdong province reported a total of 197 local transmitted patients and 2,611 asymptomatic carriers on Tuesday.
