Within 24 hours after the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) released its report that China has a "stunning lead" in 37 out of 44 critical and new technologies, Western media outlets have rushed to cover it as if that was a major challenge. While the report listed "artificial intelligence, quantum computing and robotics" as the fields where China gained a lead, some Western media picked out hypersonic technology as an example, implying it had much to do with missiles.

However, the same Western media outlet won't tell its audiences that hypersonic technology is widely used in space travel and astronautics, too. On its official website, NASA clearly states that " Hypersonic research is important both for aeronautics and space research to enable extremely fast travel on Earth as well as for future space exploration." NASA also maintains "unique specialized facilities and experts who can explore key fundamental research areas for solving the challenges of high-speed flight".

It is exactly the same hypersonic technology that China and the US use, yet they describe China's research for missiles despite the fact that their own professional institution uses it for fast travel and space exploration.

Also, hypersonics is only one of the technologies that has a duality in US reports: They are good when being used by the monopoly of US scientists and bad when Chinese scientists make breakthroughs in their research.

This argument ignores the fact that the US has military bases all over the world, invaded Iraq and bombed Syria, and sold missiles to both sides of military conflicts everywhere. It is US missiles supported by hypersonic technology that claims lives all over the world, while the hypersonic technology developed by Chinese scientists is applied on civilian machines to expand human kind's exploration of the world and universe.

Behind the US media outlets' obviously biased reports is their long-formed "empire mentality": They want a monopoly over everything. The US is so greedy that it wants to exclusively own all technology that might be applied on sharpening weapons, for which reason other nations' peaceful development and use of the weapons are viewed as threats that must be stopped.

While it attempts to hinder China's technological advances by words, the smaller and weaker nations suffer from its hindrance by forces.

Maybe US leaders need to have a glimpse at history. No empire stands eternal, and those dreaming of perpetuating their empire by forces all disappeared. There is no hint of them being a potential exception.
