Despite claiming to be for "collective defense", the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a powerful, hegemonic, and aggressive military alliance.

And that is the view of some within the alliance not just those on the receiving end of its militancy.

When the United States founded the organization with its allies in 1949, its intended purpose was to counter the Soviet Union's influence in Eastern Europe by enabling the US to base more military resources in Europe.

Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the US kept, strengthened, even expanded NATO's footprint in Europe.

To justify the continued existence of the transatlantic alliance, which augments its own military might, the US has invented one imaginary enemy after another and turned the organization into the biggest warmonger on Earth.

In late June, there were large protests in Germany calling for an end to the conflict in Ukraine, which NATO has been fueling the flames of. And on July 11, there were protests in Japan against Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's participation in the NATO summit in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania.

Maybe a good, reasonable explanation for why these protests happened in Germany and Japan lies in the fact that both nations suffered heavily from wrongly waged wars and both were defeated. People in both nations know the preciousness of peace.

But it seems those holding political power in these two nations don't share the feelings of their people. Maybe they should heed the voices of those protesting instead of only heeding the warmongers in Washington.
