Lhaze county in the Shigatse city of the Tibet autonomous region has achieved a remarkable display of environmental stewardship and dedication. Authorities and local residents in the county are going above and beyond to protect the majestic black-necked cranes and their habitat within the county's black-necked crane national nature reserve.

As a first-class nationally protected species, the crane is also categorized as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the Tibetans regard the birds as harbingers of prosperity and auspiciousness.

Established in 2003, the reserve has become a vital wintering site for these endangered birds, boasting a thriving population thanks to the unwavering commitment of conservation officers like 72-year-old Tenzin.

Dubbed the "Guardian of the Black-Necked Cranes," Tenzin has been at the forefront of protecting these remarkable birds, treating them with the utmost care and ensuring their population growth.

Lhaze county has undertaken various measures to effectively manage and safeguard the reserve, including the establishment of protection stations, the appointment of conservation officers, and regular patrols helping to monitor any potential threats.

The county now has five management and protection stations. Eight patrolmen have been employed to be dedicated to the daily management and protection of black-necked cranes. An additional 150 ecological forest rangers have been added to the protection and management force this year. They regularly patrol the protected area, rescue injured black-necked cranes, and purchase feed and medication during the hibernation period of the species to ensure their safety.

With an investment of 1.26 million yuan ($172,000) by the county government in ecological restoration and afforestation, a total of 23 hectares of land in the black-necked crane nature reserve has been afforested.

Additionally, the county has invested in ecological restoration and afforestation projects, further improving the cranes' habitat and promoting a healthier environment.

However, the success of the conservation efforts in the county is not solely due to governmental intervention. The local community also participates in preserving the reserve, raising awareness, and reaping the benefits of enhanced ecological conditions.

The coexistence between humans and nature is at the core of these endeavors. The black-necked cranes have not only become a symbol of the region's commitment to conservation but have also attracted numerous visitors by adding to the natural beauty of the county.
