The Circular Economy Parallel Forum held on June 7 during the 2024 Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo at the Kerry Hotel Pudong in Shanghai brought together more than 150 professionals to delve into the role of circular economy practices in the journey toward carbon neutrality.

Supported by the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission and the Shanghai Investment Consulting Group, the event served as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and advocacy for resource recycling.

In their opening remarks, Liu Dechun, director of the Resource Conservation and Environmental Protection department at the National Development and Reform Commission, and Zhu Minglin, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission, underscored the significance of circular economy strategies in bolstering China's carbon reduction objectives while fostering dialogue and innovation.

Professor Wang Guodong from the Chinese Academy of Engineering emphasized the importance of intelligent manufacturing and digital transformation, stating that "continuous advancements in these areas serve as powerful drivers for enterprises to revamp their development approaches and invigorate their energy".

A notable highlight of the forum was the launch of the "Green Circular Products Promotion" initiative, which saw prominent companies including BASF, Plug and Play China, ATRenew, Veolia China, and CSMET Group committing to green design principles, waste reduction efforts, and the establishment of low-carbon supply chains. This initiative aims to champion the use of recycled materials and bolster the construction of a circular economy ecosystem.

Roundtable discussions at the event focused on fostering a collaborative circular industry chain, with insights shared by experts and representatives from Tsinghua University, BASF, Budweiser, Nike, and Ouyeel.

Discussions revolved around sharing best practices and strategies to expedite the transition toward a green, low-carbon economy.

Simultaneously, TUV SUD showcased its comprehensive solutions for carbon management and sustainable development, highlighting expertise in clean energy, energy-efficient buildings, low-carbon mobility, and green consumption. The organization has the goal of helping steer the digital future of sustainability.
