Shanghai will host the Global Developer Pioneers Summit 2025 and the International Embodied Intelligence Competition at Zhangjiang Science Hall in Pudong New Area, showcasing the latest progress in embodied intelligence.

The event, scheduled to run between Dec 12 and 14, will feature a simulated emergency rescue competition where embodied intelligence robots will navigate a challenging 10-meter-by-30-meter course.

Robots are set to demonstrate their capabilities in tasks such as transporting heavy supplies, traversing 30-centimeter-high rubble and climbing 25-centimeter-high stairs.

Unlike remotely controlled vehicles, the participating robots possess capabilities enabling them to proactively perceive and interact with their surroundings.

The competition will focus on remote operation, simulating scenarios where rescue personnel can direct robots from a safe distance to avoid hazardous environments.

Teams from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Unitree Robotics and Siasun Robot and Automation will participate in the competition. Some robots boast impressive motor skills, with joint torque up to 360 Newton-meters, allowing them to carry over 40 kilograms and traverse inclines of 25 to 30 degrees.

Beyond physical capabilities, the robots will employ remote reconnaissance, acting as the "second eyes" for commanders.

Leveraging technology from the National and Local Co-Built Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center, the robots can process and transmit critical information, such as assessing the width of narrow passages for navigation.

Recognizing the need for robots to enter high-risk zones in place of human rescuers, Shanghai has invested in embodied intelligence research. The city has established a 100 billion yuan ($14.16 billion) industry fund to support the development of the industry.

The National and Local Co-Built Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center in Pudong serves as a central hub for embodied intelligence research, providing training and testing facilities.

In addition, Shanghai is also implementing a comprehensive AI development initiative, utilizing large-scale models to transform various aspects of urban life.

The event will also include a flower arrangement competition, highlighting the robot's delicate manipulation skills.
