DPP's proposal to revise regulations on cross-Strait relations condemned

A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Sunday condemned a recent proposal by lawmakers from Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party to revise regulations on cross-Strait relations, reaffirming the mainland's determination to thwart any attempt to legalize "Taiwan independence".

Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said the mainland has "full confidence and sufficient capability" to counter any form to legalize "Taiwan independence", stressing that it will never allow separatist forces to split Taiwan from China "under any name or by any means".

Chen made the remarks in response to media inquiries about a proposal by DPP lawmakers to amend the "act governing relations between the people of the Taiwan area and the mainland area". The proposal seeks to redefine cross-Strait relations as those between "Taiwan and the People's Republic of China" and to remove the phrase "prior to national reunification" from the existing text.

According to Chen, the proposal ran counter to mainstream public opinion in Taiwan and disregarded the well-being and safety of Taiwan residents. He said it openly challenged the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is part of China and attempted to change the current cross-Strait status quo, which is based on the principle that there is only one China and that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to the same China.

Chen described the move as a blatant push for "legalizing Taiwan independence" that deliberately heightened cross-Strait tensions and undermined peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region.

Accusing the Lai Ching-te authorities and the DPP of acting as "peace disruptors", "crisis creators", and "war instigators", Chen warned that "Taiwan independence means war", calling it "a dead end with no future".

"If 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces dare to take reckless actions and cross red lines, the mainland will take resolute measures in accordance with the Anti-Secession Law," Chen said.

He also urged Taiwan compatriots to recognize the dangers posed by "Taiwan independence" and to firmly oppose separatist activities, calling on them to work together to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
