China's draft law on ethnic unity aims to serve as global model, political adviser
China's draft law on promoting ethnic unity and progress will not only benefit the people of China but also serve as a valuable model for other countries and regions grappling with ethnic relations, a political adviser said.
The draft law has been submitted to the ongoing fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress for deliberation, which runs through Thursday.
Chen Xiaoyan, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and an official with the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots, said the draft law is a testament to China's confidence in its governance system and development path.
"In a world where ethnic conflicts have led to conflicts and suffering, affecting the safety of people globally, the draft law lays a foundation for unity and happiness among China's ethnic groups," Chen told China Daily during the ongoing two sessions.
"It will not only benefit the people of China but also serve as a valuable model for other countries and regions grappling with ethnic relations if it's passed," she said, highlighting the draft's significance in fostering national strength.
According to Chen, many ethnic groups from Taiwan are moved upon witnessing the policies and support available to their counterparts on the Chinese mainland.
The political adviser said she expected that the enactment of the draft law would extend similar rights and benefits to ethnic groups in Taiwan, facilitating their integration into the community of the Chinese nation.
She also emphasized the draft's role in preserving the unique cultural, educational, and linguistic identities of ethnic groups while aligning with the overarching goals of ethnic unity.
