Dog's life onstage

Urban white-collar workers live a dog's life and they love it depicted onstage. Dog's Face is a physical theater production by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center. The show created 10 years ago has become part of the repertoire at the center. A new round of performances is now on. Actors perform a hunting allegory in the concrete jungle: The hunter exploits the dog; the dog chases the rabbit. Four actors present a bitter satire without speaking a single line.

Cat’s Paw

It’s an American play by William Mastrosimone – inspired by true-life events. Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center presents a Chinese edition of the play that is “entertaining, informative, thoughtful and scary”, according to American media. A group of radical activists are determined to shock the world into stopping the polluters of the earth’s fresh water, but their hope for a fresh and clean world only brings dirty work.

Jane Eyre

Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre never gets old. An onstage production by the National Center For the Performing Arts won wide acclaim when it premiered in 2009. Actor Wang Luoyong, with experience from Broadway, and actress Yuan Quan excel in it. At a time when Beijing's theater scene is loaded with shallow contemporary productions, this classical drama looks meaningful.

Zheng's solo show

Zheng Yefu (1909-73), who was active in the 1930s and '40s, was famous for xylography through which he depicted the hardships of poor people. A special exhibition at the museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts displays his woodcuts and engravings, partly donated by his family. The exhibits reveal the artist's passion for grassroots workers and his pursuit of liberty and social equity.

Sydney symphony

Sydney Symphony Orchestra will present a concert led by chief conductor David Robertson. The featured soloist will be young Chinese pianist Zhang Haochen. The symphony was founded in 1932 and is among the best symphonies in the southern hemisphere. The program consists of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 5(Emperor) and Richard Strauss' A Hero's Life.
