Mountain-and-water tribute

The China National Academy of Painting's exhibition center is displaying more than 200 quality mountain-and-water works by the academy's 16 artists, including Long Rui, Xu Qinsong and Lu Yushun. Chiang Ming-hsien from Taiwan brings his 36-meter-long landscape New Fu Chun Shan Ju Tu (Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains), a tribute to the masterpiece of the same name by Yuan Dynasty painter Huang Gongwang (1269-1354). Chiang, now 72, is ranked among the most established and representative ink artists of his generation in Taiwan.

China since 1844

French artist Louis Daguerre invented the daguerreotype process of photography in 1839 and came to be known as a father of photography. Several years later, French visitors came to China and recorded what they saw with their cameras. An exhibition of about 213 such photos taken from 1844, and showcasing changes in China, are on display in the Guangdong Museum of Art. It is also part of celebrations to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and France.

From Taiwan to Shanghai

Chen Chengbo (1895-1947) was an important artist from Taiwan. He grew up in Taiwan, studied in Tokyo, Japan, and worked as an art teacher in Shanghai. From the time he returned to Taiwan in the 1930s, he often painted his hometown Chiayi. His personal style matured when he moved back home. His fi rst exhibition in Shanghai features his paintings as well as historical documents, photographs, fi lm recordings and more.

Physics in abstraction

In Chi Qun's solo exhibition, the 33-year-old artist creates abstract paintings featuring straight lines on translucent backgrounds. Curator Chao Jiaxing says Chi has been dedicated to the physics concepts of "the line" and "the surface", spending years working on the intricate composition and dramatic evolution of the color shades. "After years of seemingly dull and ordinary work, she achieves metallic and silky luster on her paintings. It looks like a reflection," says the curator.
