Biological industry

1. Scale

The biological industrial base had 560 enterprises by 2013, including the Yunnan Baiyao (Group) Co, Kunming Pharmaceutical Corp, Walvax Biotechnology Co, Kunming Dihon Pharmaceutical Co, Yunnan Sunpa Image Transmission Technology Co, and Yunnan Oriental Bioengineering, with 75 of the enterprises in production. The biology industry in the hi-tech zone has been an important part of Yunnan province's overall development and the industrial park had about 62,000 employees and an output value that accounted for 71 percent of the province's total.

2. Output

The base's core area has had an income growth of 20 - 30 percent in biological products, worth more than 32 billion yuan ($5.13 billion) in 2013, or a year-on-year increase of 28.5 percent, with total output value at 19.8 billion yuan, up 17.88 percent. Added value output was worth7.89 billion yuan, up 27.96 percent, from 2012 and it paid 2.57 billion yuan in taxes in 2013, up 22.39 percent year-on-year, and had net profits of 3.93 billion yuan, up 40.5 percent.

As many as 21 biotech enterprises in the Kunming National Hi-Tech Industries Development Zone saw output value exceed 100 million yuan, with the Yunnan Baiyao (Group) Co's, Kunming Pharmaceutical Corp's, and Kunming Dihon Pharmaceutical Co's hitting more than one billion yuan.

3. Cooperation

a. The Kunming National Biological Industrial Base has been working with universities and institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Kunming branch, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Institute of Medical Biology, the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany and Kunming Institute of Zoology, the Yunnan Institute of Materia Medica, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Kunming Medical University, and Yunnan Agricultural University. They have experimental sites, animal laboratories, trial production centers, and bio-safety P3 and P4 labs. The base also cooperates with development zone enterprises in more than 30 national and provincial engineering research centers, key labs, and enterprise technology centers to provide a solid foundation for scientific and technological support for the base.

b. The base also has strategic cooperation agreements with industrial parks in and outside Yunnan province and has a "Five Industrial Parks Strategic Cooperation Agreement" with Taizhou Biological Industrial Park, Jiangsu province, Wuhan Biolake Industrial Park,Hubeiprovince, the Chinese Medicine center of Benxi, Liaoning province, and the Zhangjiang Biological Park, Shanghai. And it has cooperation agreements with CAS Kunming branch, CAS Kunming Institute of Botany and Kunming Institute of Zoology, the Yunnan Institute of Materia Medica, Kunming University of Science and Technology, and Yunnan Agricultural University to provide scientific research support for the base.
