In America, this is not even a question. If both spouses work, the housework is split. If one doesn't work, he/she does the housework in lieu of paying work. Gender doesn't matter. If it starts to go otherwise, the spouse who is being overworked will not stand for it. He/she will either make that person change, or divorce the lazy bugger.
